The Australiana Pioneer Village captures the past through the eyes and hearts of its volunteers. The preservation of the pioneer era has never been more important for the village and for Australia's identity. Safeguarding various heritage listed buildings, the Australiana Pioneer Village relives history through an exciting adventure for future generations to carry forward.
Founded in 1970, the Australiana Pioneer Village located in the heart of Wilberforce reminds us of where we started as a nation. Embarking on a journey to preserve the past, the village has preserved and relocated over 19 heritage buildings throughout NSW, structurally intact from 1810.
With history extending over 100 years, the volunteers safeguard the memories of these buildings.
"We do have about 140 members and friends of the Australian Pioneer Village society. However, we only probably have around 30 who really put a lot of effort into the village," says volunteer Bob.
The continuum of history is important to the village, and as the village's popularity rises, they “could do with more volunteers,” says Bob.
The village has not only impacted the community of the Hawkesbury, with people from multicultural backgrounds indulging in the history the village offers.
"It brings back so much of the history, the culture, it's so authentic. It's good to learn about the past, to know how some of the things have been saved to show the rich culture,” says visitor Miriam.
As the village sustains Australia's cultural identity, they continue to pave the way for younger generations to experience national heritage.
The efforts from the volunteers make history something to remember, through educational teachings, activities, and tours.
Preserving history is vital to the village, as "some of these kids, their backyard could be just a stairwell, somewhere in a high rise block of units," says volunteer Phil.
