Personal Encounters Inside The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Parramatta.
The excursion at The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Parramatta, was an extremely insightful experience as myself and my peers were navigated around different areas of the newsroom. During the excursion we were led around the newsroom by Mark Davies, gaining insightful information of the pre and post production stages of radio, print and broadcast journalism.
Through the guided tour, I was able to have a hands-on experience with the teleprompters, cameras, and the ABC’s one of a kind technology broadcast studio. During the event, I was able to have conversations with professionals about the ABC and journalistic practices which impact journalists in every form. My experience at the ABC exposed me to the fundamentals of journalism and allowed me to identify my areas of interest within the newsroom.
The navigation around the ABC newsroom by Mark Davies allowed me to critically examine how print and digital journalists conduct their practices through collaborative and individual approaches. Through this, I was able to grapple the amount of research and dedication that journalism requires to be punctual and meet deadlines in a large environment.
In conjunction, the tour within the editing studio allowed me to identify key elements that I have researched within the course content, as I was able to locate key components within the studio that allowed me to have a focused understanding of how the ABC conduct their pre and post production procedures.
Within the newsroom environment, I encountered how imperative each sector of the newsroom is to create a functioning and proactive environment. The importance of individuality, collaboratively, and a diverse range of skills is needed to become a part of the newsroom.
My experience at the ABC allowed me to identify my areas of interest within the newsroom and journalism itself. Through a discussion led by news executive Mark Davies and deputy content director Caroline Gates, I was able to decipher possible career pathways and opportunities inside the ABC newsroom.
The discussions led by the ABC professionals provided an in-depth experience into how the ABC functions in all areas of its team, with coverage of radio, broadcast, digital, print, and media conversations. Caroline provided advice on getting employed within the sphere of journalism, guiding me as to how to conduct my portfolio and how to represent my individuality and skills within a set environment. The professional conversation allowed me to investigate how I approach my learning and my future outcomes.
The trip to the ABC was significant to my practices as a journalist because it allowed me to see how the newsroom functions in real time. With several areas in the newsroom functioning at once, it allowed me to understand the importance of punctuality with your specific role as an individual or team within the newsroom. The opportunity allowed me to withhold invaluable information from career experts, learning about remaining impartial within the news environment, conductive journalism, the roles between each sector of the newsroom, and how to start my career journey. The excursion at the ABC broadened my understanding of journalism and the newsroom, guiding me through building my portfolio and experience within news environments.
